My researches are mainly dedicated to the interdisciplinary studies of efficient and easy-to-use molecular diagnostics for pathogen identification, food safety monitoring, early cancer detection, and so on. In addition to developing sensitive and specific DNA/RNA detections using existing PCR/digital PCR and isothermal amplification techniques (LAMP, SDA, NASBA, EXPAR, RCA, HRCA, and RPA), I would like to interface them with new reagents or platforms to improve the performances or expand their applications, for example, CRISPR/Cas based diagnostics, microfluidic based detection, magnetic ionic liquid (MIL)-based sample preparation, and smartphone-based point-of-care diagnostics/devices. I have a lot of expertises in devising new primers/probes (e.g., the FBD probe & CBP) and new isothermal DNA/RNA amplification methods (e.g., IMSA, SLIMP, and DAMP). Apart from nucleic acid targets, I’m also good at applying ELISA/digital ELISA, FISH, and PLA/PEA technologies to the protein detection/imaging.
